My 6-Day Journey in Morcocco: Lost Luggage, Rooftop Views, Cooking Class, etc
Before the adventure truly began, we were staying at the Royal Palm Fairmont Marrakech, a stunning resort that redefined luxury. Located just outside the bustling heart of Marrakech, the resort felt like a serene oasis. With its grand palm-lined entrance, sprawling gardens, and breathtaking views of the Atlas Mountains, the Royal Palm was the perfect retreat. Every corner of the property reflected Moroccan elegance, from the intricate tile work to the warm, inviting decor. It was the ideal starting point to experience the vibrant culture of Morocco while enjoying world-class amenities and unparalleled comfort.
Day 1: Travel Day with No Luggage
Mid-morning wake-up and drive to the airport. The three-hour pre-departure warning didn’t apply to this trip—the TSA line took all of two minutes, completely empty. Excitement started building after the first flight to Atlanta. Everything was going smoothly… until the calm before the storm.
The first red flag: my brother misunderstood me and got me chicken fried rice instead of orange chicken WITH fried rice. I was tight—big attitude (not gonna lie) because I know I said orange chicken. Luckily, my dad swapped his food with me. Bald-headed dad + spoiled girl energy, right? This was my first international flight in years—not in first class, though (first-world problems). It wasn’t too bad— seats were manageable for the 8 hour flight.
Second red flag: the landing into Marrakech. It felt like we dropped from the sky—my least favorite landing ever. Simultaneously, the third red flag hit: my sister’s AirTag still showed her luggage in Amsterdam. I brushed it off, assuming mine wasn’t left behind.
After dealing with customs (why do international airports love multiple checkpoints?), I stood by the carousel, watching my family’s bags roll out. Mine never came. My sister’s AirTag was right—no bags. Annoyed, hot, and desperate for a shower, we reported the claim. The first night in Morocco was spent at the resort. My sister and I bought clothes from the gift shop. Dinner at the hotel followed—a low-key night. I ended the day reading by the pool with my dad, introducing him to sushi (a shocking but pleasant first). Then, it was off to bed.
Day 2: Luggage Arrives
I woke up at 1 PM (very unlike me). The urgency to locate my bag was real. Thankfully, my dad confirmed its arrival. I could’ve cried—the trip could finally begin properly. We had rooftop reservations at DarDar—highly recommend btw.
Retrieving the luggage was smooth—resort staff helped immensely. I spotted my bag from a distance and ran to grab it. After closing the claim and passing through yet another checkpoint, we rushed back to make our reservation. Of course, my family ran late (again), hitting the 15-minute grace period right as we arrived. We found the restaurant after a minor struggle and enjoyed an incredible meal on the rooftop. The pink couscous à la viande was both visually stunning and delicious—9/10. The mojito I had was perfection. We wandered the area before cabbing it back to the resort, where I fell in love with Moroccan tea. I knew I had to bring some home.
Day 3: Cooking Class, Market Shopping, and Comptoir Darna
Kept my promise to join my mom for breakfast and a quick workout. Breakfast was mid—mostly pastries—but the gym was nice. Afterward, I took pictures in my Shein bikini and green cover-up but skipped the swimming part because it was too cold.
The cooking class with Chef Khimsa was a highlight. We started at the market, gathering ingredients before heading to class. The hands-on experience was fun, from making Moroccan tea to preparing a tajine. Starving by the end, we devoured the delicious meal we’d made. Afterward, we shopped at the market. I snagged Moroccan tea, kettles, argan oil products, and a free Akar Fassi.
Dinner at Comptoir Darna was an unforgettable experience—classy Moroccan vibes, live entertainment, and incredible food. My lobster ravioli and weeping tiger steak were standout dishes. The dessert—a caramel tart—was slightly dry but still enjoyable. The live show, featuring belly dancers and candle performers, added to the night’s charm. Definitely a must-visit.
Day 4: Jardin Majorelle, YSL Museum, and Dar Soukkar
This was my favorite day. The day started diving into the city of Marrakesh. Jardin Majorelle’s beauty was unmatched, with exotic plants and vibrant colors. Unfortunately, we rushed through it because my family was starving. A quick bite at the garden’s cafe (chicken nuggets and fries) saved the day. Then, we headed to the YSL Museum, where I indulged my inner fashion lover. Though smaller than expected, it was fascinating to learn about YSL’s history.
Dinner at Dar Soukkar was another dinner-and-show experience. The preset menu included sushi, Thai basil crispy chicken (watch out for peanuts!), and a giant raspberry macaron for dessert. The live entertainment was captivating, featuring traditional dances and a surprise birthday celebration for my dad.
Day 5: Last Full Day in Morocco
Bittersweet vibes on our last day. After breakfast, a quick cardio session, and lunch with the family, we hit the mall. Browsing international malls is always fun—I picked up matching bracelets for friends and a snow globe for my collection. Sadly, I missed out on henna due to a language barrier and time constraints.
Back at the resort, we packed and grabbed dinner—a white pizza with shrimp and lobster (10/10). I laid everything out to avoid leaving anything behind and managed a few hours of sleep before our early flight.
Day 6: Nightmare Journey Back
Our airport experience was chaotic. Multiple checkpoints, a screaming toddler on the flight, and… lost luggage (again). My brother’s bag stayed behind in Paris, and our connecting flight seats had been reassigned. Despite the drama, we made it home, and Chick-fil-A saved the day. My dad and brother retrieved the bags later while the rest of us crashed.
Reflections:
Despite the hiccups, Morocco was incredible. The food, culture, and experiences made it unforgettable. Next time, I’ll be getting an air tag and enjoy a smoother journey!
